Toganenwood Estate B&B - 1832 to Present

This historic Finger Lakes waterfront property extends back to the late 18th Century and in a remote way, to the French Revolution. In 1791 Charles Williamson arrived from Scotland as an agent of Lord Pultney to develop and sell a tract of land, extending from Bath to Lake Ontario. 8/15/09 the state review board unanimously approved the Estate to be on the Registry for Historic Places, which is an honor!

Henry Towar was his agent for the area South of Lyons, which he named Alloway after his native Alloa, Scotland. Towar was of Huguenot origin, driven out of France by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Historical records reveal that he was a friend of the dauphin, Louis Philippe, later king of France, and while Louis Philippe was in exile; he stayed at this historically significant estate.

Henry Towar died in 1846 and the farm was sold to Robert Ennis. For more than a century, four generations of the Ennis family, operated a highly successful farming operation. Former Governor Thomas Dewey designated it as one of the "Century Farms of the Empire State".  In 1852 the Ennis boys took a break from their farming chores on the Estate to moon light building the historic Erie Canal.  In fact, they layed one of the Erie Canal lime stone blocks near the main entrance to the greek revival house!   In the 1800's the Ennis' would let the ladies out of the carriage to enter the house up top while the men walked up and down the double stairs ... in front to hitch the horses, in back to unpack the luggage.

In 1985, the property was purchased by well known auctioneer, Duane Gansz, who restored the home and barns to their original beauty. His love for the property is demonstrated by the care he took in the restoration of the outbuidings, which include a 9000 sq foot, two cupula historic barn.  He lived on the Estate for 20 years with his wife and two children.  They named the estate "Toganenwood", an acronym which combined the names of the three families who owned, loved and resided at the historic estate.

We bought the property in 2005 and added the B&B to the Toganenwood name ... for Betty and Brian!  We are honored to be a part of it's history and will enjoy sharing the Estate and it's History with our family, friends and guests!
