Geneva Mansions of Historic and Architectural Significance

Geneva, which grew up at the end of the 18th century on the banks of Seneca Lake, has an amazing and eclectic collection of well-preserved mansions of historic and architectural significance, including examples of Greek Revival, Federal, Victorian Gothic, and Jeffersonian styles, most from the first 3 decades of the 19th century.

South Main Street is lined with row houses, resembling those of Georgetown in Washington, D.C., and grand mansions overlooking Seneca Lake.

Besides the "south Main Street" walking tour brochure, pick up another one called "Architectural Landmarks" (available at the Prouty-Chew House & Museum). Have a look at Pulteney Park, the original village green, and Washington, Genesee, Castle, and Jay streets to survey Geneva's architectural feast.

Photo of Palmyra Canal Falls

A man-made waterfall flowing from the Erie Canal into the Ganargua River, west of Palmyra, Wayne County.
You can get the best view of this waterfall from the Canalway Trail bridge over the Ganargua River. You can also visit Lock 29 which is on an island formed by the Canal, the diversion falls, and the Ganargua River. From the east end of the park, you can follow a trail along the old Erie Canal to the village of Palmyra (1/2 mile) to the corner of Church Street and Route 31 and see the only intersection in America with a church on all four corners.

The Erie Canal
Website: http://www.eriecanal.org/index.html

The Erie Canal is famous in song and story. Proposed in 1808 and completed in 1825, the canal links the waters of Lake Erie in the west to the Hudson River in the east. An engineering marvel when it was built, some called it the Eighth Wonder of the World.

This site has much information and a links section that will allow you to research every aspect of the Erie Canal. Great site!

Built in 1894 but given a whimsical Deco-Baroque makeover in the 1930s, with fantastic murals and Moorish touches, the 1,400-seat theater was first an opera house and later vaudeville theater.

Today it has carved out a niche showing independent and foreign art films and hosting rock and other concerts. Try to take in a movie or show; otherwise, if the box office is open and nothing's going on, ask for a peek inside.

Day Trips through Scenic Wayne County

The Finger Lakes Region is especially noted for its natural scenery – the lakes, the valleys, the beautiful vistas from the hills surrounding the lakes. Man too has made an imprint on the beauty of the landscape of the region, from the quilt-like patterns of plowed fields to the layout of the village streets to the structures they have built. Barns, farmsteads, simple village homes, elaborate country estates, churches, factories, theaters, and old fashioned downtowns are all integral parts of the landscape that make up the Finger Lakes Region. Within this landscape there are landmarks that can only be described as “surprising”.

Finger Lakes Scenic Railroad
Website: http://www.fingerlakesscenicrailway.com/events.html

Finger Lakes Railway Corporation began operation on July 23, 1995. The investors purchased 118 miles of trackage previously known as the Geneva Cluster from the well-know train company, Conrail.

The main track from Syracuse to Canandaigua was the New York Central / Auburn Rail Road and dates back to 1835. Other portions of the Finger Lakes Railway were once the Lehigh Valley ( Geneva to Kendaia) and the Pennsylvania Railroad (Penn Yan to Watkins Glen).

Since 1995 Finger Lakes Railway has grown rapidly from 6 to 30 employees; from 3 to 10 locomotives; and from an initial car movement of 5,600 to over 16,000 car loads per year. The freight lines serve a diverse customer base handling a wide range of commodities including plastics, canned foods, grain, lumber, paper products, scrap and finished steel, and minerals such as salt, sand, soda ash and fertilizer. Customized service has allowed for new companies to locate on the line while giving existing customers a way to increase their business.

With the breakup of Conrail, Finger Lakes Railway now has connections with three Class I Railroads: CSX, Norfolk Southern and CP Rail, a benefit to all of our customers.

The nostalgic experience of rail travel has spurred the latest resurrection, since 2000, of passenger excursion service throughout Central New York State. This new service is expected to stimulate tourism in the Finger Lakes region and throughout New York State.

Erie Canal Adventures

From the building of the Erie Canal with its mule towed barges to today, the Erie Canal has captured the imagination of Americans.

More of the New York State Canal System is located in the Finger Lakes than any other vacationland.

There are many other opportunites to learn about and enjoy the canal. The Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse is located in the only remaining Weighlock building. There are also many canal parks, and launches where one can simply stroll along the shore, or rent a kayak for the afternoon.

Chimney Bluffs - Sodus Bay
Website: http://www.inforochester.com/chimney.htm

20 minutes away -

Chimney Bluffs is on the east side of Sodus Bay. This is not a waterfall, but it is a natural wonder! It is a glacial moraine which has been eroded into a series of knife-edge fingers.

A well developed state park with 4 miles of hiking trails and many spectacular views of the jagged cliffs with Lake Ontario as a backdrop, it has become a popular summer destination. The Bluff Trail offers visitors a hike along the edge of the clay cliffs, giving a exhilarating and somewhat dangerous experience.

The bluffs were formed by a glacial Drumlin, which has been eroded away by wind, lake waters, rain and ice, forming razor-like edges. This is not rock, but a clay-like dirt, making these cliffs very unstable. The formations will change drastically from year to year.
